Media Release: New PGP Whole Disk Encryption Encryption Product

PGP CORPORATION ANNOUNCES NEW WHOLE DISK SECURITY ADDITION TO ITS SUITE OF ENCRYPTION PRODUCTS

Full disk and file encryption with IT deployment tools for laptops,
desktops, and external devices

Palo Alto, CA/05 October, 2004 - PGP Corporation, a global leader in enterprise encryption solutions, today announced PGP® Whole Disk for individual and enterprise customers needing to protect the entire contents of their laptops, desktops, or external disks. PGP Whole Disk Encryption encryption provides protection for the entire drive, including the operating system, applications, and data files, making those disks or files unreadable by anyone without the proper access credentials. This functionality complements the existing PGP Corporate Disk product that secures files and volumes and adds to the suite of PGP encryption products that share keys and administration tools.

Several issues have accelerated demand for full disk encryption solutions. The regulatory and legislative environment is growing more stringent in its requirements to protect confidential customer and corporate information, prevent fraud, and ensure corporate security practices. At the same time, unauthorized access to data residing on desktop and laptop computers is increasing. Laptops, in particular, represent a major area of corporate exposure because their small footprint makes them a preferred on-the-road mobility tool.

"Enterprise customers need to secure confidential data, especially on vulnerable laptops," said Andrew Krcik, vice president of Marketing at PGP Corporation. "We have now expanded our suite of encryption products to add encryption of entire disks to existing products for file and volume encryption, desktop- and network-based email, and FTP and batch data transfers. With PGP Whole Disk Encryption, customers can source all their encryption needs from a single, trusted vendor."

Key features of PGP Whole Disk Encryption encryption
Features unique to PGP Whole Disk Encryption:

  • Passphrase Recovery Token - Lets Administrators generate one-time passphrase recovery tokens that permit users to access their encrypted drives without accessing the network. This capability enables users to recover information faster if they lose their passwords.
  • Centrally Managed Auto-Configuration - Allows Administrators to tailor configuration options to corporate needs, selecting security settings using Microsoft's Active Directory group IDs. This feature eliminates the need to create an installer for every configuration.
  • Integration with Microsoft Installer - Provides centralized deployment using Microsoft's System Management Server (SMS), enabling administrators to push upgrades to their users (i.e., silent installations). With Microsoft Installer, only modified files will be updated, making it much easier to deploy and manage enterprise-wide file and disk encryption capabilities.
  • Hibernation Corruption Prevention - Eliminates the inherent full disk encryption threat of disk corruption associated with the Hibernation phenomenon. Users will no longer experience data corruption from laptops going into Hibernation mode.

Availability
PGP Whole Disk Encryption will be available at the same time as the next major PGP Desktop release. PGP Whole Disk Encryption will be a new and separate PGP product; an upgrade path will be available to all customers with current PGP Desktop or PGP Corporate Disk licenses.
