Press Release: BNP Paribas Deploys PGP Encryption Solutions to Secure Email Communications
PGP Encryption Platform Protects Sensitive Data and Ensures Global Regulatory Compliance
Palo Alto, CA / 07 April, 2008 – PGP Corporation, a global leader in enterprise data protection, today announced that BNP Paribas, a global leader in banking and financial services, has standardized on the PGP® Encryption Platform to secure confidential business information. The company is deploying PGP Universal™ Gateway Email to secure email with its customers and business partners, including financial services firms and regulatory institutions such as central banks. PGP Universal™ Server, the foundation of the PGP Encryption Platform architecture, provides BNP Paribas with centralized policy administration and key management through a single Web-based console.
The ChallengeAccording to Standard & Poor's, BNP Paribas is one of the five strongest banks in the world, with 161,000 employees in 85 countries. In 2005, its partners began to request that the company adopt an email encryption solution to ensure the secure exchange of information. BNP Paribas also has to comply with security and privacy regulations in all the countries in which it does business.
The company needed an email encryption solution that would meet several key criteria: be compatible with the technology used by its business partners, simplify key management, be transparent to users, and integrate with the existing Lotus Notes system. The ability to send encrypted information would offer BNP Paribas a significant advantage over its competitors.
The Solution
In BNP Paribas's IT organization, Stéphane Detruiseux's Risk and Security Expertise group, which includes Stéphane Lebrère's Technical Solutions and Standards team, tested several solutions before selecting PGP Universal Gateway Email and the PGP Universal Server. "We discovered that our partners use solutions based on either the OpenPGP or S/MIME encryption standard," says Detruiseux, "and if we used a compatible solution, we wouldn't have to send, receive, or install any public keys because the exchanges were automatic."
Among the other reasons BNP Paribas chose the PGP® encryption solution: transparency to end users through gateway-to-gateway encryption and transfer; integration with Lotus Notes for flagging specific emails for encryption; the ability to set email encryption policy based on content, sender, and recipient, among other identifiers of confidential information; and PGP Corporation's knowledge and understanding of the needs of multinational corporations.
PGP® partner Hermitage Solutions assisted BNP Paribas with the deployment. "Hermitage Solutions was very knowledgeable," Lebrère says, "and they are always available when we have a question."
Interest in email encryption is growing at BNP Paribas as the PGP® solution proves its competitive advantage and long-term business value. According to Lebrère, "Every week, we have more people interested in evaluating the solution."
