Media Release: Participation in DKIM Email Authentication

PGP CORPORATION ANNOUNCES PARTICIPATION IN JOINT CISCO-YAHOO EMAIL AUTHENTICATION SYSTEM

Palo Alto, CA/14 June, 2005 PGP Corporation, a global leader in enterprise data security and encryption solutions, today announced it is part of a four-vendor core working group drafting the new DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) email authentication specification. A combination of Yahoo"s DomainKeys and Cisco"s Internet Identified Mail technologies, DKIM addresses the growing problems of spam. Representatives from Yahoo, Cisco, PGP Corporation, and Sendmail comprise the core working group creating the new DKIM specification. Additional supporters include IBM, the Microsoft Exchange and Hotmail groups, and VeriSign.

“The goals of the DKIM working group are aligned with the PGP vision of eliminating barriers to widespread adoption of encryption,” said Jon Callas, CTO and CSO of PGP Corporation. “Users do not need to know an authentication solution is in place because no changes are required to the email client. The solution is domain-based rather than user-based, making it easier to implement and more secure. And the solution only identifies the original sender of an email message.”

The DKIM working group will present the specification to appropriate standards bodies as a proposed email sender-authentication standard. “The important thing to keep in mind is that DKIM is just the start of what will probably become a broader solution,” Callas said. “For example, DKIM doesn"t currently solve any authorization issues related to what users are allowed to do in an email system. What it does provide is a solid foundation on which we can layer additional pieces such as reputation systems, as required.”

The DomainKeys scheme is already supported by major Internet mail providers including Gmail, Earthlink, and Yahoo. Current users of DomainKeys will be able to simply upgrade to the DKIM solution, simplifying deployment. Organizations already using the interim DKIM solution include Yahoo"s partners--BT Group, Rogers Communications, and SBC Communications--as well as large Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Europe and India.
