Software Maintenance Renewal – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Renewing Software Maintenance or a Subscription License

Who is eligible to renew?
Customers with an active Subscription License or Software Maintenance are eligible to renew. To expedite the renewal process, please provide your Renewal Key when requesting your renewal.

Why should I renew?
To continue receiving product Updates, including new features, you should renew your Subscription License or Software Maintenance. Without a Subscription License or Software Maintenance, you are entitled to receive only maintenance releases ("bug fixes") for your licensed product.

How do I renew?
If you have received a renewal notice email, you can use the Renewal Key link sent to you by PGP Corporation to renew your Subscription License or Software Maintenance. If you purchased your license from a PGP Authorized Reseller, please contact that reseller to renew. If you purchased your license from the online PGP Store and no longer have access to your renewal email, please contact PGP Customer Support at support.pgp.com. When contacting PGP Customer Service, please include as much order detail as possible, including your original order email address, date of order, and order number.

Do I need to upgrade my software when I renew?
No. After completing the renewal process, you will be issued an updated License Number for the software version you currently have installed. You can decide to upgrade at any time during the valid period of your Subscription License or Software Maintenance.

Once I renew, how do I update my License Number for PGP Desktop?
After renewal, you will receive a new License Number via email. For Windows, click on the PGPtray in the system tray and choose License. After the License Authorization window appears, click Change License. Enter the new License Number. You may copy and paste the License Number directly from your email. Click the Authorize button.

For Mac OS X, open PGP Desktop. From the menu bar, select PGP|License. After the License Authorization window appears, click Change License. Enter the new License Number. You may copy and paste the License Number directly from your email. Click the Authorize button.

For updating the License Number of other PGP products, please review your product documentation or visit PGP Support at support.pgp.com for more information.

Why is the name of the product I'm renewing different than the one I purchased?
As PGP Corporation added new features and functionality to its products, some PGP product names changed. When renewing your Subscription License or Software Maintenance, product names will not change. However, you are eligible to upgrade to the corresponding current PGP product.

What is PGP Corporation's new version and maintenance release policy?
Customers with valid Subscription Licenses or Software Maintenance are eligible to receive all new releases of their licensed product. Those customers without a Subscription License or Software Maintenance are eligible to receive maintenance releases (“bug fixes”) only.

Does my renewal entitle me to support?
You may use the PGP KnowledgeBase available at support.pgp.com to obtain public PGP support information. You may also use the PGP Forums available at forums.pgpsupport.com to share information with other PGP users. PGP Support moderates these user forums and may supply information to the forums.

PGP Corporation also offers a variety of PGP Incident Support for pay programs. Please visit www.pgp.com/support to find out more about PGP Support options.

What are my Renewal Key and Upgrade Key?
When you originally purchase or subsequently renew your Subscription License or Software Maintenance, you are provided with both a Renewal Key and Upgrade Key. The Renewal Key is used to identify your software installation when renewing. The Upgrade Key allows you to request a valid License Key when upgrading your software to a new version. You can determine your eligibility to upgrade by visiting http://www.pgp.com/products/upgrade/index.html or by clicking on the Upgrade Key link in the email sent to you by PGP Corporation.

Subscription License Details

When does my subscription end?
Subscription Licenses are issued for terms of 1 year. Your renewal date will be 1 year from the original purchase date. For example, if you purchased your Subscription License on July 24, 2005, it will be up for renewal on July 24, 2006. A new Subscription License will have an updated renewal date of July 24, 2007.

What happens if I don't renew my Subscription License?
If you do not renew your Subscription License, your software will progressively lose functionality after the expiration date.

Whole Disk Encryption:

  • It will automatically decrypt the boot disk shortly after the expiration date
  • Removable drives are not automatically decrypted

Messaging:

  • PGP Desktop will not perform email encryption
  • PGP Desktop will perform email decryption

Instant Messaging:

  •  Enryption of instant messaging sessions is disabled

Virtual Disk:

  • Virtual Disks cannot be created
  • The end user can only use Virtual Disks as "read-only" mode

Other:

  • Smart Cards are not supported in Unlicensed

Do I have to remove PGP software if I let my Subscription License expire?
If you let your Subscription License expire and have no intention of re-licensing the software, you must honor the PGP End User License Agreement and de-install the software and destroy all copies of it.

Software Maintenance Details

What is Software Maintenance?
Software Maintenance entitles PGP Perpetual License users to receive new product versions, including new features and functionality.

When does Software Maintenance expire?
Software Maintenance is valid for 1 year from the date of purchase. For example, if you purchase a Perpetual License with Software Maintenance on July 24, 2004, it will expire on July 24, 2005. When you renew Software Maintenance for your Perpetual License, the new expiration date will be July 24, 2006.

Why should I renew my Software Maintenance?
Software Maintenance is an economical way to receive the most up-to-date versions of PGP products. Because the only constant in technology is change, keeping current is important. If you renew your Software Maintenance, you are assured of receiving all new releases for your licensed software during the term of your Software Maintenance.

What happens if I don't renew my Software Maintenance?
If you do not renew your Software Maintenance, you will receive maintenance releases ("bug fixes") only for your licensed software but not new product versions, including new features. If you allow your Software Maintenance to lapse, you cannot renew it later; if you should need new features, you will have to repurchase a new Subscription or Perpetual License at the regular price. The majority of PGP customers take advantage of this opportunity to renew their Software Maintenance.
